MARGIN / PRIVACY

Privacy, with a margin.

Your local reading library

Margin’s extension stores articles, images it can cache, highlights, notes, collections, reading preferences, review history and reading-time records locally in your Chrome profile. Opening the popup never creates a draft. Clicking Save adds an article to your library. Articles opened in Full view are kept as drafts by default; you can disable drafts in Settings to add articles only when you explicitly save them. Turning drafts off hides existing drafts without deleting them; you can still delete them or include them in a library backup. Your library is not automatically synced to a Margin cloud account. Optional public article sharing uploads only the article you explicitly choose to share. Margin does not operate an advertising or AI analysis service.

Optional site-time tracking runs only on sites you enable and permit. Its records contain domains and durations, rather than a history of page URLs, email content or keystrokes. You can pause tracking and edit or remove the tracked-site list.

Local backups outside the browser

You can enable automatic backups by choosing a folder on your computer and granting browser read/write access. Margin creates its own Margin Backups subfolder there and writes a complete archive of retained reading data and reading preferences. It keeps the latest archive plus seven daily copies. Backups also contain controls for your shared links, so you can stop sharing after restoring a backup. Keep backup files private. Sign-in credentials, purchase keys, mail settings and in-flight deliveries are excluded. Folder access is remembered in the extension profile and may need to be renewed.

These backup files remain on your disk after uninstalling Margin. In a fresh installation, restore the latest archive into an empty library and reconnect the folder. Recovery covers the last successful backup; check its timestamp before uninstalling. If you choose a folder synchronized by another provider, that provider may synchronize the files under its own settings and policies. Margin itself does not upload these backups to a server.

Public article sharing

Choosing Create public link uploads a cleaned copy of the selected article, its title, author, original source address and any included images to Cloudflare R2. Anyone with the link can read that copy without installing Margin. Notes, highlights, collections, reading history, account credentials and other library records are not included. Shared pages are marked not to be indexed by search engines. Share only content you have permission to distribute and are comfortable making accessible by link.

Margin stores link status and a hash of its management key in Cloudflare D1. Short-lived rate-limit records use a daily hashed network identifier to reduce abuse. The management key stays on your device and in your optional local library backups. Use Share → Stop sharing or Settings → Sharing to disable a link and remove its hosted article and images. Recipients may retain copies they already downloaded or copied. Sharing is intended for public articles; known Gmail and Outlook inbox pages are blocked. Cloudflare processes requests to provide the sharing service under its privacy policy.

When information leaves your browser

Limited Use of user information

Margin’s use and transfer of user information complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Information is used only to provide and improve Margin’s disclosed reading features, and is transferred only when necessary to perform a feature you request or as otherwise permitted by that policy. We do not sell user data, use it for advertising or lending decisions, or allow humans to read your saved reading without your explicit consent for a specific support request, except where necessary for security or legal obligations.

Purchases and licence checks

Dodo Payments handles checkout, recurring payments, subscription management, receipts, licence-key delivery and payment-related information. Margin does not collect or store your payment-card details. Dodo processes checkout data under its privacy policy.

The extension keeps the licence key, browser activation identifier, trial dates and verification status in trusted local extension storage. Activation sends the key and a random browser label to Dodo; verification and deactivation send the key and activation identifier. These calls do not send saved article text, article URLs or highlights. Buyer contact fields returned during activation are discarded. Licence credentials are excluded from library backups.

This website and its preview

This website does not add advertising, marketing pixels or audience-analytics scripts. Animations follow your device’s reduced-motion setting. Interactive examples use sample articles and highlights; they do not change your extension library or upload your reading to Margin.

This website is hosted on Vercel. Its hosting infrastructure may process basic request information, such as IP address, browser information and operational logs, to deliver and secure the site. Vercel’s processing is covered by its privacy policy. Fonts are served with the website rather than requested from a third-party font service.

Support messages

If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you include. We use that information to answer your request, help with the product, or resolve a licence or refund issue. Include only the information needed for your request. Support correspondence may be kept while an issue is open and for reasonable follow-up or record-keeping needs.

Your choices and deletion

You can delete articles and highlights in the extension, pause optional tracking, export a backup, or clear the website’s local preview data through your browser. Removing the extension removes its browser-managed library and remembered folder permission, but does not delete files already written to your chosen backup folder. You can delete those files yourself. Confirm a successful backup first if you want to retain your reading. Deactivating a browser releases its licence activation without deleting the local library.

For requests about personal information held in support correspondence, contact rajivpriyadarshi23@gmail.com. For information Dodo or a hosting provider processes independently, contact that provider as well. Applicable statutory privacy rights remain available; purchase providers may need to retain certain records for legal, tax or fraud-prevention purposes.
